After spending the semester at the State Capitol, and volunteering with Our Children Our Future in Charleston, I believe that this organization can help define the future of West Virginia. I aim to increase student involvement in the Chapter, collaborate with local legislators to prepare for the upcoming legislative session, open at least one high school chapter in Monongalia County, encourage OCOF Chapters on other college campuses in West Virginia, hold weekly meetings, continue to build local community partnerships within the Morgantown area, and assist in planning a forum, held at WVU, for students from around the state to attend. The following steps are how I envision OCOF at WVU achieving these ambitious goals. I plan to coordinate with state Delegates and Senators from across the state in an effort to advocate for policy proposals from OCOF, with a particular emphasis on local officials. I am confident that with OCOF’s broad range of support from across the state that the WVU Student Chapter can help pave the way for positive legislative action. I have attended a steering committee meeting for OCOF and am excited to engage student chapter members for their input. As students, we can help bridge the gap between kids and adults. I plan to work closely with OCOF affiliates throughout the state including Chris Kimes, Stephen Smith, Stephanie Tyree, and Lisa Wotring. I have previously worked with Stephen, and personally know Chris, Lisa, and Stephanie. Furthermore, I would like to see members of the student chapter develop the framework for upcoming policy forums. West Virginia University students have the potential to cultivate, and grow, an organization focused on fighting the grievances and injustices across the state. With this in mind, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming year for the WVU Student Chapter of Our Children Our Future.
I’ve held a Secretary position for a community service club in the past and I’ll be a nerd and admit that I like to take notes. I appreciate timeliness and the good work that our parent group does. I am volunteering for this position not because I have ample time to commit, but because I want to assist OCOF in any way possible. I look forward to seeing our group grow and be able to do positive advocacy work in our community.
I have been a dedicated member of the student chapter since our first meeting. I have experienced first hand what a student organization like this is capable of doing for an individual. I initially joined because my friend Kathryn asked me to come check it out. Prior to this semester, I had had very little background on policy and legislation. Because of this, I found it to be very intimidating. Our Children, Our Future made it very easy for me to learn and adjust to this realm of public health work. It also inspired me to get more involved. Many students believe their voice does not count. This is our community. We do have a voice and the resources. Lets get together and do something to change it for the better.
I believe that I have a lot of great ideas to make our student chapter grow not only in membership but also gain more of a presence on campus with different events and activities.
An organization becomes strong through effective and reliable communication with its members and partners. I will bring my ability to be clear through communications as best as possible.
I want to help this chapter of OCOF continue to grow and have an impact in the community. I also have experience in leadership positions in new clubs as I was President of the Graduate Sport and Exercise Psychology Club at Georgia Southern during its 2nd year in existence and am currently the VP for the Graduate SEP club here at WVU.
